What are you waiting for? What would make you truly happy?
My Story
When I was a college freshman struggling with the end of a high-school relationship, I attended a Christian retreat. All I could think about was getting home to patch things up with my boyfriend. But God had other plans. My first day, as I counted the hours until I could drive home, the preacher spoke about wearing “horse blinders.”
Blinders are attached to horses’ bridles to isolate their view. They help race and carriage horses stay focused on what’s ahead and avoid getting spooked or distracted by things happening around them. But problems arise when we don these leather flaps designed for mares and geldings.
Focusing on our God-given calling is good. Avoiding negative distractions is good. But we can become so fixated on a goal, a dream, or a fear that we miss all the incredible blessings around us. What people and opportunities has God placed in our lives now? How is He using us and molding us now?
After the sermon ended, I tore off my horse blinders and studied the strangers filling the room. Some became my friends. As my perspective changed, my weekend changed. It became an incredible opportunity to live and discover all God had given me, all He intended me to be.
What Makes Us Truly Happy
I often forget the lesson I learned that chilly October weekend. I zero in on the next goal instead of appreciating everything I already have.
But God gently reminds me that this day, this month, this year will never come again. Each season of our lives is unique, with its own gifts and challenges.
So in your rush to reach whatever you’re yearning for, don’t forget to unwrap all the presents under the tree now. Breathe in their pine-scented fragrance. Taste and see that the Lord is good.
Join me now in reaching up and ripping off our horse blinders. Open your eyes to all the answered prayers around you. And don’t forget to thank the Giver of every good and perfect gift. Put your hand into His and squeeze.
