About Christy Brunke

Welcome, friends! I’m blessed to be a mom, a pastor’s wife, and the bestselling author of the fictional book, Snow out of Season. But my greatest claim to fame comes from being a child of the King. Because of that, I’m passionate about my family, unborn children, and God-written love stories. Though I used to live in China, now I love serving in ministry here in Maryland. Praying you’ll be blessed as you read my blogs, my story, and my award-winning novel!

A Novel of Elizabeth I by Sandra Byrd

Roses Have Thorns: A Novel of Elizabeth I

A Novel of Elizabeth I

What would it be like to leave your country and your family forever to serve the most powerful woman in the world and marry one of the richest and most highly-titled men in England?

Bestselling author Sandra Byrd answers that question in the third and final installment in her Ladies in Waiting series: Roses Have Thorns: A Novel of Elizabeth I.

As Byrd marked the passage of time between books one and two by the appearance of King Henry VIII, we know around 15 years have passed between books two and three by the way Byrd describes Elizabeth.

At the end of The Secret Keeper, Elizabeth was a sweet 16-year-old princess uncertain how to deal with the attentions of an older lord. But when we meet her in Roses Have Thorns, she’s now a confident queen in her early thirties, with tiny wrinkles at the corners of her eyes.

In the seventh year of her reign, a 17-year-old Swedish girl named Elin von Snakenborg arrives in England and catches the eye of the Marquess of Northampton. He asks for her hand in marriage, and she accepts.

But as her fellow travelers embark on their return voyage—the first of which took ten months—Elin discovers the truth about this man she’s no longer sure she can trust. Has she just abandoned all for nothing?

Despite  the forces that oppose her, she becomes Helena, the Marchioness of Northampton, and one of Elizabeth’s closest ladies in waiting. Over the next few decades, these two brave women battle betrayal and ultimately learn to sacrifice what is good for what is best.

My Thoughts

Roses Have Thorns is a thoroughly-gratifying conclusion to the Ladies in Waiting series (tweet that!) and my favorite glimpse into the life of Elizabeth I. With Sandra Byrd’s superb use of symbolism and foreshadowing, and the true fairy tale that was Helena von Snakenborg’s life, this richly-textured period piece satisfies on so many levels. Even the genealogy tree hidden at the back adds a lovely surprise to the already perfect ending.

I would recommend this story to women of all ages, especially those who enjoy romance, history, or inspirational fiction.

A Novel of Kateryn Parr by Sandra Byrd

What if you were in love with a nobleman when you caught the eye of the king who just executed his last wife? (Tweet that!)

By 1542, King Henry VIII had married five women. Two he’d divorced, two he’d beheaded, and one he hadn’t had time to tire of because she died from childbirth just a year after they said, “I do.”

Despite the prestige and privilege inherent in becoming queen, who would sign up to become his sixth spouse? In The Secret Keeper, the second novel in the Ladies in Waiting series, Sandra Byrd tells the story of that brave and brainy beauty through the eyes of a fictional lady in waiting named Juliana St. John.

Ladies in Waiting historical fiction series Sandra Byrd(For my review of the first novel in the series—To Die For: A Novel of Anne Boleynclick here.)

The daughter of a rich knight, Juliana is expected to marry the bland son of a prosperous merchant, the only eligible man in their town. But she hopes for something, and someone, more.

When Sir Thomas Seymour comes to Wiltshire on business, he hears Juliana read Scripture in church. He then offers her an opportunity to join the household of his beloved, Lady Kateryn Parr. Juliana goes, but warily, for she carries a secret.

Then King Henry starts pursuing Kateryn. Juliana is thrust into a world of power and peril that could prove the end of her dreams and even her life.

My Thoughts

The Secret Keeper: A Novel of Kateryn ParrWith perfect pacing and rich historical detail, The Secret Keeper transports our heart, mind, and senses to the time of the Tudors while addressing issues women from every generation face.

From rape to romance and infertility to spirituality, I sighed in both sorrow and satisfaction along with our plucky heroine.

In short, The Secret Keeper kept me enthralled from its opening chapter until the last lines on its final page. Even now, the character’s triumphs and tragedies resonate in my heart.

I recommend this book to women of all ages, especially those who enjoy romance, history, or inspirational fiction.

A Novel of Anne Boleyn by Sandra Byrd

To Die For: A Novel of Anne Boleyn

To Die For: A Novel of Anne Boleyn

What would it be like to be friends with someone famous, wealthy, or powerful? What about a controversial, and later condemned, queen?

From 2012 until 2013, I had the privilege to be mentored by bestselling author Sandra Byrd. During that time, I fell in love with her fiction, especially her award-winning Ladies in Waiting series.

Set in the 1500s, each book sweeps us into the saga of the Tudor family from the perspective of an influential queen and her closest lady in waiting. The trilogy begins with To Die For: A Novel of Anne Boleyn.

The second wife of the infamous King Henry VIII, Anne became the most powerful woman in England, but ultimately lost her head (tweet that!) from the fickleness of her husband’s affections.

As Anne tells her lady in waiting, Meg Wyatt, “He hath ever been constant in his career of advancing me; from private gentlewoman he made me marquess, from marquess a queen, and now that he hath left no higher degree of honor he gives my innocence the crown of martyrdom” (p. 315).

While her best friend rises and falls in the king’s favor, Meg finds herself caught between her service to Anne, her love for a priest, and the pressures of her family. Will she have to sacrifice not only her dreams but her life to be faithful to her calling?

My Thoughts

A 2012 Christy Award finalist and a 2011 Library Journal Best Books Pick, To Die For is, quite simply put, to die for. I rarely read a paperback more than once, but this captivating period piece proved worthy of a second and even a third reading.

Ladies in Waiting historical fiction series Sandra ByrdWith rich historical detail, an engrossing story line, and a brave, loyal, and self-sacrificing—yet very human—heroine, this story transports you to the time of the Tudors and inspires you to live a life worthy of your calling, whatever that might be.

I recommend this book to women of all ages, especially those who enjoy romance, history, or inspirational fiction.

March for Life: Pro-life and Pro-woman

March for Life 2016 theme: Pro-life and Pro-woman

On Friday afternoon, January 22, pro-life supporters will hit the streets of D.C. for the 43rd Annual March for Life. The event will begin at noon with a rally at the Washington Monument.

Super Bowl Champion Matt Birk and Jim Daly, the president of Focus on the Family, will be speaking as well as Sue Ellen Browder, author of Subverted: How I Helped the Sexual Revolution Hijack the Women’s Movement. A poet and Christian music artist are also scheduled to perform.

After the rally, around 1 p.m., participants will march peacefully down Constitution Avenue, beginning between 15th and 17th Streets.

Why did the organizers choose such a cold time of year?

On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court legalized abortion in the infamous Roe vs. Wade case. Since then, every year on January 22, men and women brave the  winter weather to help create “a world where every human life is valued and protected.”

What do former attendees have to say about the March for Life?

“Despite having worked for a successful pro-life institution at the time of my attendance (2014), I was still amazed at how many Americans came together to support the cause,” said Kayla Strata, the former Director of Legislative Affairs at Ohio Right to Life.

“It’s so easy to become discouraged by the challenges pro-life advocates face, but my . . . experience in D.C. really allowed me to not just realize but also feel how strongly pro-life our country is. It was an amazing experience to see thousands upon thousands sacrifice time, money, and warmth to take a stand for such an important cause.”

“The youth mass prior to the march is always fantastic for young people,” said Tiffany Farley, the executive assistant for the Gabriel Network. “But the actual march is truly amazing. So many people show up in support of life.”

“There are always people singing and praying as they walk,” Farley went on to say. “There are smiles, hugs, and warm wishes exchanged by those who see each other there each year.”

“People come from all over the country to witness and be part of this very peaceful event in hopes that one day everyone will see life for what it is . . . a gift.”

What’s this year’s theme?

Though many in our culture believe being pro-woman means being pro-choice, March for Life opposes that idea with this year’s theme: “Pro-life and pro-woman go hand in hand.”
