About Christy Brunke

Welcome, friends! I’m blessed to be a mom, a pastor’s wife, and the bestselling author of the fictional book, Snow out of Season. But my greatest claim to fame comes from being a child of the King. Because of that, I’m passionate about my family, unborn children, and God-written love stories. Though I used to live in China, now I love serving in ministry here in Maryland. Praying you’ll be blessed as you read my blogs, my story, and my award-winning novel!

Heidi Cruz: An Amazing Asset to Ted

As we celebrate the life of Nancy Reagan in the wake of her March 6th passing, I thought it would be fun to explore the life of another potential First Lady. Heidi Cruz has been fascinated by politics since she read a Time magazine article about the race between Ronald Reagan and Walter Mondale when she was only 12. But who is this now 43-year-old woman whose husband is seeking to serve in the Oval Office?

Elegant and Experienced

CNN said, “Nearly every candidate heralds their spouse as an asset, but few significant others in this election season — with the exception of Hillary Clinton’s — have the same level of political experience as Heidi Cruz.”

Heidi has worked in the Treasury Department, in the U.S. trade representative’s office, and on the National Security Council, as the director for the Western Hemisphere. While serving as an economic policy aide for George W. Bush’s 2000 presidential campaign, she met Ted, who was also an aide, but for domestic policy.

He asked Heidi out two days later, and five months after that, they said, “I do.” Several years after they got married, she stepped out of politics to pursue a career in the business world. She’s currently taking leave from her job as the managing director of an investment banking firm to assist Ted with his campaign.

“The sense of genuine concern was elegant,” said Eddie Nabors, an alderman from Mississippi, who met Heidi at a rally. He praised the way she “meets, greets and identifies” people. “I have one afterthought,” he said. “Get her on the podium.”

Gifted and Gracious

Heidi earned a degree in economics and international relations from Claremont McKenna College in California where she was known as being “whip-smart” and then went on to complete her MBA at Harvard.

When Heidi met Ted, her friends said she’d met her match and intellectual equal. P. Edward Haley, a professor of international strategic studies at Claremont McKenna, said, “They’re both extremely bright.”

Cruz describes Heidi as “beautiful, brilliant and my very best friend in the whole wide world.”

“Heidi could get along with almost anyone,” said Lawrence B. Lindsey, the chief economic adviser for the 2000 Bush campaign.

“Mrs. Cruz comes across as confident but gracious,” said The New York Times. “She disarms by asking personal questions, and answers those put to her directly and candidly.”

“I want to make sure that everybody is comfortable,” Heidi said. “I want to make sure that everybody is talking to each other.”

Productive and Persuasive

When she was only six, Heidi was making $150 a week baking and selling bread with her brother. She later used that money toward college and a car. “I think it definitely taught us the value of hard work,” she said. “We were used to being highly productive at all times.”

Today, Heidi applies her energy to Ted’s campaign where their friends and advisers describe her as “a competitive fundraising dynamo.”

“There are very few spouses who can get on the phone on a cold call to a prospective donor and make a more compelling case in a personal and effective way than Heidi Cruz,” said Chad Sweet, the Cruz’s campaign chairman.

Ted said, “She is disciplined and she engenders trust, which is a powerful thing in life.”

Servant-Hearted and Self-Sacrificing

You might say serving is in Heidi Cruz’s DNA. (Tweet that!) The daughter and granddaughter of medical missionaries, Heidi was raised around the world as her family helped the less fortunate in developing countries like Kenya, Nigeria, and the former Belgian Congo.

“I think those early travels made me expansive in terms of the things I wanted to do,” Heidi said.

Her brother became a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and cared for the wounded poor in Haiti for a year following the 2010 earthquake. Heidi felt called to a different cause.

Her friend Julie Sweet said, “The way she always phrased it was people are called in different ways to serve.”

During Reagan’s administration, her parents took her and her brother to D.C. “I . . . got inspired by the history of our country and leadership and saw a direct tie to the service orientation of my family to public policy.”

When Ted was behind in the polls for the Senate primary, he came to Heidi with a proposal.  “Sweetheart, I’d like us to liquidate our entire net worth, liquid net worth, and put it into the campaign.”

“What astonished me, then and now, was Heidi within 60 seconds said, ‘Absolutely,’ with no hesitation.” They invested over a million dollars, “which is all we had saved,” Cruz added.

Today, I’m taking a break from my typical blogs to address a topic that will impact our country for the next four years and, in reality, the next quarter of a century.

In addition to other spheres of influence, our next president will choose a Supreme Court justice. Will he or she choose one who upholds our constitution and supports life and liberty?

Here are my top ten reasons to vote for the man the National Review describes as “a great Reaganite hope.” You might prioritize them differently or add other reasons to the list. If so, comment at the end!

#10: He’s the Only Republican Who Can Beat Trump

Right now, it seems only two candidates have a path to the Republican nomination: Ted Cruz and Donald Trump.

I admire Trump’s frankness, business acumen, and desire to “make America great again,” but his bullying speech, lack of political experience, and vacillating opinions on important issues, not to mention his plan to attack the wives and children of terrorists, make him my least favorite Republican candidate.

Cruz: "What Washington needs is more common sense"

Though Kasich and Rubio each have their strengths, as former Republican nominee Carly Fiorina said, “The only guy who can beat Donald Trump, who has beaten Donald Trump, is Ted Cruz.”

Cruz himself told reporters, “A vote for John Kasich, a vote for Marco Rubio, is effectively a vote for Donald Trump.”

However, I listed this as reason #10, because I’ve been rooting for Cruz since the first 2016 presidential debate I watched. That was in August 2015, long before Trump became the Republican forerunner.

#9: He Stands With Israel

As Rabbi Shmuley Boteach said, “Ted Cruz is a phenomenal friend of Israel and exhibits unique courage in constantly standing in Israel’s defense.”

#8: He’ll Lead Us Out of Debt

Cruz has opposed federal budget increases and raising the debt ceiling. If elected president, he’ll enact a Balanced Budget Amendment.

#7: He’s Effective and Experienced

Cruz has served in the Department of Justice, as the domestic policy adviser to former president George W. Bush. He’s also served as the director of the Office of Policy Planning at the Federal Trade Commission.

He was the Solicitor General of Texas from 2003 to 2008, arguing nine cases before the Supreme Court and winning five. He currently represents Texas in the U.S. senate and chairs two Senate subcommittees.

#6: He Does What He Says
Trust Ted Cruz Courageous Conservative Constitution banner

Unlike many other politicians, Cruz’s record shows he follows through on his promises.

David McIntosh, the president of Club for Growth and a former US. Representative for Indiana said, “One of the differences about Ted is he’s one of those politicians when he says he’s going to do something, he does it.”

#5: He’s Bright, Eloquent, and Hardworking
Ted Cruz: "Millions of Americans are rising up...."

Cruz worked two jobs to put himself through Princeton, where he earned a bachelor of arts in public policy. While there, he competed in national debating championships and was named the U.S. National Speaker of the Year.

Afterwards, he earned a Juris Doctor degree at Harvard Law School, graduating magna cum laude. “Cruz was off-the-charts-brilliant,” said Alan Dershowitz, an acclaimed professor there. “Without a doubt he is among the smartest students I’ve ever had.”

“He had brilliant insights,” Dershowitz went on to say. Cruz’s “career has not surprised me. I thought he would go on to accomplish important things.”

#4: He’ll Defend Our Nation

In addition to honoring our veterans, Cruz has detailed plans to defeat ISIS, protect our homeland, and rebuild our military.

The American Spectator said, “Senator Ted Cruz presented a well thought-out foreign and national defense policy based on the original Reagan conservatism.”

#3: He’ll Boost Our Economy

Are you out-of-work, hoping for higher wages, or just looking for a brighter future for your kids or grandkids?

The Tax Foundation says Cruz’s tax plan will, “improve incentives to work and invest, which would increase gross domestic product (GDP) by 13.9 percent over the long term. This increase in GDP would translate into 12.2 percent higher wages and 4.8 million new full-time equivalent jobs.”

I don’t know about you, but five million new jobs sounds good to me!

#2: He’ll Fight For Our Freedoms

Growing up hearing his family’s stories about life in Cuba under Castro, Cruz decided as a child to be a freedom fighter. “It’s a tremendous blessing to be a child of an immigrant who fled oppression because it makes you understand just how fragile liberty is.”

As an adult, Cruz has passionately defended the Constitution and our religious liberties.

“It takes someone of true principles and convictions like . . . Ted Cruz to stick to their guns,” said former Republican nominee Carly Fiorina. “Ted has been fighting these fights—whether it’s for religious liberty or our individual right to keep and bear arms or American sovereignty. And he has won.”

#1: He’ll Protect the Sanctity of Human Life

I want a candidate who will balance our budget, fight for our religious liberties, and protect and represent America with strength, wisdom, and dignity. But more dear to my heart than any of those things are the millions of unborn babies whose lives hang in the balance.

As Cruz says on his website, “Life is a precious gift from God. We must cherish and defend it. Without life, there is no liberty; without life, there is no pursuit of happiness.”

But Cruz doesn’t just give lip service to life. His record proves he’ll fight for it. Among other things, he’s advocated to investigate abortion practices. He’s also successfully defended New Hampshire’s parental notification law and a federal law to ban partial birth abortions as well as Texas’s Rider 8, which prevents tax dollars from going toward abortions.

In addition to other ways our next president will impact the sanctity of human life, he or she will choose a Supreme Court justice. Will our next commander-in-chief appoint a justice who supports a culture of life?

Finally, not to be unequally yoked, Ted’s wife is pretty incredible too. Read her story here!

A Novel of Elizabeth I by Sandra Byrd

Roses Have Thorns: A Novel of Elizabeth I

A Novel of Elizabeth I

What would it be like to leave your country and your family forever to serve the most powerful woman in the world and marry one of the richest and most highly-titled men in England?

Bestselling author Sandra Byrd answers that question in the third and final installment in her Ladies in Waiting series: Roses Have Thorns: A Novel of Elizabeth I.

As Byrd marked the passage of time between books one and two by the appearance of King Henry VIII, we know around 15 years have passed between books two and three by the way Byrd describes Elizabeth.

At the end of The Secret Keeper, Elizabeth was a sweet 16-year-old princess uncertain how to deal with the attentions of an older lord. But when we meet her in Roses Have Thorns, she’s now a confident queen in her early thirties, with tiny wrinkles at the corners of her eyes.

In the seventh year of her reign, a 17-year-old Swedish girl named Elin von Snakenborg arrives in England and catches the eye of the Marquess of Northampton. He asks for her hand in marriage, and she accepts.

But as her fellow travelers embark on their return voyage—the first of which took ten months—Elin discovers the truth about this man she’s no longer sure she can trust. Has she just abandoned all for nothing?

Despite  the forces that oppose her, she becomes Helena, the Marchioness of Northampton, and one of Elizabeth’s closest ladies in waiting. Over the next few decades, these two brave women battle betrayal and ultimately learn to sacrifice what is good for what is best.

My Thoughts

Roses Have Thorns is a thoroughly-gratifying conclusion to the Ladies in Waiting series (tweet that!) and my favorite glimpse into the life of Elizabeth I. With Sandra Byrd’s superb use of symbolism and foreshadowing, and the true fairy tale that was Helena von Snakenborg’s life, this richly-textured period piece satisfies on so many levels. Even the genealogy tree hidden at the back adds a lovely surprise to the already perfect ending.

I would recommend this story to women of all ages, especially those who enjoy romance, history, or inspirational fiction.

A Novel of Kateryn Parr by Sandra Byrd

What if you were in love with a nobleman when you caught the eye of the king who just executed his last wife? (Tweet that!)

By 1542, King Henry VIII had married five women. Two he’d divorced, two he’d beheaded, and one he hadn’t had time to tire of because she died from childbirth just a year after they said, “I do.”

Despite the prestige and privilege inherent in becoming queen, who would sign up to become his sixth spouse? In The Secret Keeper, the second novel in the Ladies in Waiting series, Sandra Byrd tells the story of that brave and brainy beauty through the eyes of a fictional lady in waiting named Juliana St. John.

Ladies in Waiting historical fiction series Sandra Byrd(For my review of the first novel in the series—To Die For: A Novel of Anne Boleynclick here.)

The daughter of a rich knight, Juliana is expected to marry the bland son of a prosperous merchant, the only eligible man in their town. But she hopes for something, and someone, more.

When Sir Thomas Seymour comes to Wiltshire on business, he hears Juliana read Scripture in church. He then offers her an opportunity to join the household of his beloved, Lady Kateryn Parr. Juliana goes, but warily, for she carries a secret.

Then King Henry starts pursuing Kateryn. Juliana is thrust into a world of power and peril that could prove the end of her dreams and even her life.

My Thoughts

The Secret Keeper: A Novel of Kateryn ParrWith perfect pacing and rich historical detail, The Secret Keeper transports our heart, mind, and senses to the time of the Tudors while addressing issues women from every generation face.

From rape to romance and infertility to spirituality, I sighed in both sorrow and satisfaction along with our plucky heroine.

In short, The Secret Keeper kept me enthralled from its opening chapter until the last lines on its final page. Even now, the character’s triumphs and tragedies resonate in my heart.

I recommend this book to women of all ages, especially those who enjoy romance, history, or inspirational fiction.

A Novel of Anne Boleyn by Sandra Byrd

To Die For: A Novel of Anne Boleyn

To Die For: A Novel of Anne Boleyn

What would it be like to be friends with someone famous, wealthy, or powerful? What about a controversial, and later condemned, queen?

From 2012 until 2013, I had the privilege to be mentored by bestselling author Sandra Byrd. During that time, I fell in love with her fiction, especially her award-winning Ladies in Waiting series.

Set in the 1500s, each book sweeps us into the saga of the Tudor family from the perspective of an influential queen and her closest lady in waiting. The trilogy begins with To Die For: A Novel of Anne Boleyn.

The second wife of the infamous King Henry VIII, Anne became the most powerful woman in England, but ultimately lost her head (tweet that!) from the fickleness of her husband’s affections.

As Anne tells her lady in waiting, Meg Wyatt, “He hath ever been constant in his career of advancing me; from private gentlewoman he made me marquess, from marquess a queen, and now that he hath left no higher degree of honor he gives my innocence the crown of martyrdom” (p. 315).

While her best friend rises and falls in the king’s favor, Meg finds herself caught between her service to Anne, her love for a priest, and the pressures of her family. Will she have to sacrifice not only her dreams but her life to be faithful to her calling?

My Thoughts

A 2012 Christy Award finalist and a 2011 Library Journal Best Books Pick, To Die For is, quite simply put, to die for. I rarely read a paperback more than once, but this captivating period piece proved worthy of a second and even a third reading.

Ladies in Waiting historical fiction series Sandra ByrdWith rich historical detail, an engrossing story line, and a brave, loyal, and self-sacrificing—yet very human—heroine, this story transports you to the time of the Tudors and inspires you to live a life worthy of your calling, whatever that might be.

I recommend this book to women of all ages, especially those who enjoy romance, history, or inspirational fiction.
