About Christy Brunke

Welcome, friends! I’m blessed to be a mom, a pastor’s wife, and the bestselling author of the fictional book, Snow out of Season. But my greatest claim to fame comes from being a child of the King. Because of that, I’m passionate about my family, unborn children, and God-written love stories. Though I used to live in China, now I love serving in ministry here in Maryland. Praying you’ll be blessed as you read my blogs, my story, and my award-winning novel!

When Postpartum Packs a Punch Book Review

When Postpartum Packs a Punch by Kristina Cowan“First I had a baby. Then I felt crazy.” (Tweet that!) To one degree or another, can’t all new moms relate to those opening lines of When Postpartum Packs a Punch?

I first met the author, longtime journalist Kristina Cowan, at a writing critique group. At the founding meeting of a new Word Weavers chapter, we discovered we were both pregnant with our first daughter.

To our delight, though due 8 days apart, our daughters Syma and Michaela were born on the same day.

But, as all moms know, giving birth isn’t all sunshine and roses. Neither is the postpartum period. Three years earlier, after the birth of her son, Kristina had battled postpartum depression. She soon discovered 12-25 percent of new moms suffer from perinatal mood disorders (p. 230).

When she recovered, she endeavored to stem the plague of perinatal mood disorders the best way she knew how–through writing.

This April, When Postpartum Packs a Punch was published. The book begins with her own tale: “Nobody Told Me It Wouldn’t Be Perfect: My Story of Postpartum Trauma.”

Cowan then explains the differences between the five major perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Through stories of women who have faced them and interviews with experts who have treated them, we see these illnesses up-close. At the end, we discover they are both treatable and temporary.

Ultimately, these narratives of heartache and healing offer women the hope they desperately need. “By saying, ‘I’ve been where you are, and it’s awful. But I got through it, and so will you,’ we show new mothers they’re not alone. We offer hope, which is the heart of this book” (Cowan, p. 19).

My Thoughts

With gripping stories and thorough research, When Postpartum Packs a Punch is a must-read for moms. (Tweet that!) Cowan’s candid discussion of her own depression and intrusive thoughts encourages openness in others. Plus, her beautiful writing makes the journey even more enjoyable.

Whether you’re a parent or a health care provider, you’ll find this book both fascinating and informative. I recommend it to moms and dads, doctors and nurses, and women with perinatal mood disorders.

Sandra Byrd: An Inspiring and Intimate Interview

Bestselling author Sandra Byrd has written everything from devotionals to historical fiction. Last month, I reviewed her novel, A Lady in Disguise. This week, I have the privilege of asking her several questions that have been burning in my heart.

Sandra Byrd, what do you think compels novelists to write the books they do?
Bestselling author Sandra Byrd

Sandra Byrd

I don’t know that I can speak for all novelists, but I think many of us write about things and eras in which we are interested.

I have loved reading books set in England since I was a young teenager, and have enjoyed both Tudor and Victorian books since that time. So, it was with both pleasure and trepidation that I thought I’d turn my hand toward trying a few of my own!

I wanted to stay true to the era and genre, but also add a perspective or insight that had not been fully explored. Perhaps the most fear-inspiring task in my career was to write in the voice of Queen Elizabeth 1! However, it was also truly satisfying, professionally.

Historical books require a lot of research, so we spend a lot of time with that research, poking around not only to get things right but to turn over undiscovered gems. If you’re writing about eras you love, all that research feels more like pleasure than pain.

What inspired you to tackle sex trafficking in your latest release?

Sandra Byrd quote from A Lady in DisguiseI do always seek to connect my historical heroine with my modern-day readers, so that is on my mind when I’m sifting through story ideas. One lovely, inspiring thing about the Victorians is that they were very active in ministry and helps – so I had many causes from which to choose.

I was going to stick with the tried-and-true works of the Salvation Army, but my research led me to the Pantomime Waifs, and their story struck me, and the stories of those who worked to rescue them, and my heart wrenched – for them, then, and kids, today.

It just all fell into place, and I hope we can somehow keep confronting that and pulling those kids out, keeping other kids safe. Those trafficked children are truly the least of these [tweet that!], and if each of us does one thing to help in one way, we can make a difference.

What surprised you the most as you researched prostitution in Victorian England?

Unhappily surprised that so much of the darkness which pervades our world now, where the vulnerable of all ages must sell their bodies to survive – or have their bodies sold by others – so present. Happy that there were many who were not afraid to leave the comfort of their own homes and lives to help the less fortunate. It was inspiring, really. We must confront darkness wherever it lurks, and speak for the sake of those who have no voice.

So far, you’ve written devotionals, contemporary fiction, and historical fiction. Can you tell us about your next project and what led you in that direction?

I’ve just completed the manuscript for Lady of a Thousand Treasures, which is also set in Victorian England, an era I love. This book is probably best classified as Victorian Romantic Suspense, and it was thrilling to research and write.

There will be two more books in that series, and as soon as the edits are completed for this book, I’ll be diving into the next!

In the meantime, please do check out my devotional, which will release very soon. It’s called The One Year Experiencing God’s Love.

I felt like, as I wrote it, I was on a second honeymoon of sorts with the Lord. My prayer is that the readers will feel that very same way as they journey with Him through late 2017 and 2018. Here’s the link!

A Lady in Disguise: A Book Review

A Lady in Disguise by novelist Sandra ByrdWhat issue inspired Sandra Byrd’s latest release, A Lady in Disguise?

Every year, an estimated 14,500 to 17,500 people are brought into the United States as slaves. Many of the women and children are forced to serve the sex industry.

Unfortunately, this problem isn’t unique to our nation or generation. Even in Victorian England, orphans and other vulnerable girls were lured into prostitution.

In her latest release, Sandra Byrd tackles sex trafficking with the elegance I’ve come to expect from her historical fiction. (Tweet that!)

Set in London in the late 1800s, A Lady in Disguise is the third novel in her Daughters of Hampshire series.

Synopsis

Like my debut novel, Snow out of Season, A Lady in Disguise begins at a funeral:

“I stood, that bleak day, in the graveyard in the village near Winton Park. The chapel’s stone gargoyles, pitted and blinded by the elements, nonetheless mocked our mortality with their jeering grins.”

Years after losing her actress mother, Miss Gillian Young must now mourn the death of her father too. But the man she remembers as a devoted dad and a respected constable is now accused of being a criminal.

As a costume designer, Gillian is dependent on the patronage of polite society. Will this scandal cause her to lose her position at the famed Drury Lane Theatre Royal? Worse, will it jeopardize her budding romance with the dashing Lord Lockwood?

To honor her mother’s legacy, Gillian shelters orphaned girls and trains them in the art of dressmaking. But unscrupulous men have more insidious plans for these budding beauties. She follows their trail—as well as a photograph left behind by her father—to a house of ill repute.

Despite the mounting evidence, Gillian becomes more and more convinced of her father’s innocence. But as she searches for more clues and tracks down more loose ends, danger dogs her at every turn. Will she have to sacrifice her life to restore her father’s good name?

My Thoughts

A Lady in Disguise is another beautiful Sandra Byrd story to savor. With atmosphere, poetic prose, a worthy heroine, and an intricate mystery, this romance resonates.

A Lady in Disguise historical fiction quoteLike all Byrd’s novels, meticulous research adds an air of authenticity to every page. With Gillian, you’ll hurry down London alleys, alter costumes in Drury Lane, and explore a crumbling mansion in the dead of night.

I recommend this book to women who enjoy mystery, Gothic romance, and historical fiction.

Connie Mom: A Portrait of a Giver

English Teacher Connie Mom in Chinese garb

Connie Mom in Chinese garb.

Like no one I’ve ever known, Connie Mom loved people to their full potential. (Tweet that!) That devotion ultimately enabled her to influence an entire nation of English learners. But it all began with surrendering her life to the Lord and being sensitive to His leading.

In February 2000, Connie flew to Arizona to visit one of her heart-adopted sons. While reading Christianity Today, he noticed an advertisement that ended with “Leave a Legacy—China!”

Connie had long forgotten her childhood dream to go to the Orient, but by the time she finished reading the ad, God had called her there.

She applied to the English Language Institute and, six months later, moved to Nanchang. Ovenlike in the summers, her new home city was dubbed one of the mainland’s Four Furnaces. Connie accepted this with her usual good-humored wisecracks. Despite the weather, her heavenly Husband had led her to Nanchang, and Nanchang was where she would remain. But the weather wasn’t the only surprise awaiting Connie.

Chinese nationals rarely hug, even close family members, but Connie saw everyone as a son or a daughter to embrace with God’s love. She soon became known as “Connie Mom” to her students, colleagues, and even the school administrators.

Coaching Students to National Victory

Jiangxi Normal University assigned Connie to teach English and writing classes. On her own, she also started a translation club, a storytelling troupe, and speech and public speaking classes. In her “spare time,” she founded an English library and held seminars for students and educators all over the country.

Two years after Connie arrived in Asia, one of her students did what no one from poor Jiangxi had done before. Li Jiayu won second place in a nationally-televised English public-speaking competition. Two years later, Connie’s student Ai Lisha won first place in the same competition. By then, it had become the most prestigious English-speaking contest in China.

From the President to the Proletariat

Connie’s motivation was to show people God’s love, not to gain recognition. But the recognition came anyway.

In 2004, at a State banquet at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Connie was given a solid gold medallion. She had won the National Friendship Award.

The next year, Jiangxi Normal University awarded Connie an honorary doctorate. They also made her a full professor and gave her an assistant, her house for life, and a car with a driver.

In 2006, the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press asked Connie to write a book. They wanted to know how she coaches and why her students become so successful. Two years later, they published A Guidebook to English Public Speaking Training.

But no matter how famous Connie grew, she continued to make time for ordinary people. She even cleaned and painted her favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurant with her speech class and some visiting Americans.

The Cancer that Called Connie Mom Home

But in December 2010, two years after her book was published, Connie discovered a lump in her breast. The next month, while in the U.S. for winter break, she was diagnosed with stage two cancer. By the summer of 2012, the cancer had progressed to stage four.

But Connie knew God wasn’t finished with her yet, and she still had more to do in the East. Despite being extremely ill, she labored on for the good of her students. Meanwhile, God did his part. When she returned to the States for a check-up in December 2012, she discovered she was in remission.

During Connie’s battle with cancer, she continued receiving accolades. In 2011, China’s largest university press created an award just for her. In 2014, a national organization named her the Favorite Foreign Teacher of Chinese Students.

Her son Aaron said, “Even with the cancer, my dear mother has more energy than most people I know. She is, and has always been, an unstoppable force in the field of encouragement for others.”

The summer of 2015, Connie finally moved back to the States. Though she hated leaving her adopted sons and daughters in Asia, she loved being with her American family, including her two sons and seven grandchildren.

Her Enduring Legacy

Connie’s example continues to inspire me to love people to their full potential.

That love has also inspired TV, radio, and magazine interviews as well as a short story by Moira Laidlaw.

“I think everyone made exceptions out of Connie, because she made exceptions out of everyone else,” Laidlaw said. “She thought everyone was exceptional.”
